One half of my favoritest band is releasing solo material “in early 2009”. The project called Fever Ray is, like everything else, surrounded by an air of mystery. There’s a sneak peek at the first single “If I Had A Heart (Instrumental)” on her myspace. The vibe is recognizable if you’re at all familiar with the The Knife . . .
Siblings Karin and Olof Dreijer (AKA DJ Coolof) make up this electronica band. Her haunting vocals and his “atmospheric, hypnotic synth-scapes send chills” on their 2006 release Silent Shout (named best of 2006 by Pitchfork). For a reminder of what they sound like head over to myspace or last.fm.
YOU might have heard their songs in a Sony commercial, or on Ugly Betty, Entourage, or even CSI: NY.
The Knife is something of a fascination/obsession to me. They have been my top favorite band for the past 4 years, still going strong. In fact, I love them so much I’ve often thought of getting a knife tattooed . . .
Honey is Cool (couldn’t agree more..) was Karin’s previous band which lasted from 1996-2000. Her dark/sweet vocals can be heard on the few albums the band had released, and the sound is more rock-n-roll than what she’s currently creating. (By that, I mean there’s actual guitars and drums involved.) Hear their songs on last.fm.
Aside from being a creative force of her own, she often lends her distinguished voice on other musician’s songs. Most famously on “What Else is There” by Royksopp . . .
Note : the woman in the video is Marianne Schröder, although Karin appears 2/3. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, another possible tattoo idea . . . .
